Funk music is a genre that has its origins in the African American communities of the 1960’s. It is a combination of soul music, R & B and jazz. The sound is unique but is heavily inspired by genres of the past. The bass line is at the forefront of funk music in comparison to others forms of pop where vocals and chorus are often the focus of the work.

Rhythmic groove is a strong characteristic of the genre. A funk band will usually feature an electric bass and a drummer. Multiple grooves will interlock in complex ways in this form of music.

James Brown can be seen as a pioneer of funk. Without his experimentation it is likely that this style would not have taken off and gained such a wide popularity. Funk eventually spread to the point where the distinctive sound would become synonymous with the decade of the 1970’s. It entered the mainstream and was frequently heard in the discos, movies and television shows of the era. It could even be stated that funk characterised the popular soundscape of the 1970’s.

Despite being deep rooted into the era of the 70’s the sound of funk has continued to inspire musical artists of the modern age. Funk still exists today and there are plenty of modern bands that can be said to be a part of this sound style. Music continues to evolve and as a consequence funk has been assimilated into hybrid genres.
